Sys Admin - oriented
www.usenix.org/sage/ SAGE: the System Administrators Guild is a Special Technical Group of the USENIX Association. This is the key professional society for system administration in general, with a bit of a Unix bias. Sponsors the annual LISA conference. Membership includes a subscription to the journal  :login.

The SAGE Job Descriptions are a de facto standard for distinguishing between the duties of Novice, Junior, Intermediate/Advanced, and Senior system administrators.

SAGE has recently developed a certification program.

http://www.uuasc.org/ UUASC: the Unix Users Association of Southern California has monthly meetings in El Segundo (first Thursdays) and in Irvine (second Mondays). It is a great place to pick up diverse knowledge and network with other sys admins. No dues; all are welcome!
General computing and Information Technology

http://www.computer.org/ IEEE Computer Society. There is a Los Angeles Council.
